Missing teeth can ruin an otherwise beautiful and healthy smile. When one or more teeth are missing, surrounding teeth eventually shift out of place, which may cause bite, speech, and dental health problems that can lead to additional tooth loss. Dental implants offer a permanent form of tooth replacement, whether for a single tooth or an entire row of teeth. Dr. Glenn Spencer, our experienced implant dentist, can place dental implants for patients at his Bloomfield Hills practice, also serving Troy and all of Michigan. Dental implants can help patients with missing teeth maintain dental health and restore functionality and beauty to their smiles.
A dental implant consists of two main parts: a titanium post that is implanted into the jawbone, and a natural-looking artificial tooth that is attached to the post. Like other tooth replacement options, such as dental bridges, dental implants fill in the spaces left by missing teeth and prevent surrounding teeth from shifting out of place. However, dental implants function and look much more like natural teeth than other replacement techniques. In addition, the placement of dental implants in no way damages or weakens the surrounding teeth.
Because the implanted post lasts a lifetime, there is little maintenance required for dental implants, and they can be cared for like natural teeth. If the artificial tooth becomes worn or discolored over time, it can easily be replaced with a new one.
Several steps are involved in the placement of dental implants, beginning with an examination by implant dentist Glenn Spencer, D.D.S. at our Bloomfield Hills practice.
During the initial consultation for dental implants, Dr. Spencer will examine the patient's mouth and determine if she or he is a good candidate for the implant procedure. One of the most important areas the doctor will look at is the patient's jawbone: there must be enough healthy jawbone tissue to support the implant post. A mold will be made of the patient's teeth to provide important measurements and allow us to custom-craft the artificial tooth that will be fixed to the titanium post. Dr. Spencer will also answer any questions the patient may have about dental implants.
After Dr. Spencer has determined a patient is eligible for dental implants, she or he will return to our office for the implant placement surgery. During the procedure, Dr. Spencer will place the implant post into the jawbone, where it will function as an artificial tooth root. While the mouth heals, the titanium post will fuse to the jawbone, forming a strong foundation for the replacement tooth. This healing period is an extremely important part of the dental implant process.
After the patient's mouth has had time to heal, and the jawbone has sufficiently fused with the titanium post, our implant dentist will place a natural-looking artificial tooth on top of the post. With proper care, the tooth restoration will last for many years, and the implanted post will last a lifetime.
The placement of dental implants is an excellent option for permanently correcting missing teeth, and can even help prevent additional dental health problems from developing.
